THINGS TO DO IN Bizerte: 1-DAY ITINERARY

With its beautiful old port lined with multicolored boats, a small medina where one can experience Tunisian local life, and a sandy shoreline lining the coast, Bizerte is a small seaside city in the north of Tunisia.

You can explore the narrow alleys of the old town, enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea from the Spanish Fort, or go on a day trip to the nearby Ichkeul National Park, a bird-watcher's paradise.

Bizerte may not be as popular as the tourist-oriented seaside villages in the south of Tunisia, but this laid-back coastal port town definitely has its own charms.
This 1-day travel itinerary includes the best things to do in Bizerte and offers tips on where to stay and where to eat. To help you plan your visit to Bizerte, we’ve also added a few day trip ideas.

Day 1

Morning: The Spanish Fort (Fort d’Espagne)

The remains of the massive Spanish Fort is the first stop on our Bizerte walking tour itinerary. Built by an Ottoman pirate back in the 16th century, Fort d’Espagne served to protect the city from the Spanish invaders. You will have an opportunity to see exquisite stonework, as well as a few antique cannons. The nearby open-air theatre used for live music performances is also worth checking out.

Medina of Bizerte

Step inside the old town of Bizerte, one of the most popular sightseeing areas in the city. Unlike the commercialised medinas in Tunisian cities in the south, this is a purely residential medina. Instead of a tourist boutique offering all kinds of souvenirs, the old town of Bizerte is where carpenters and metalworkers actually live and work. You will come across many workshops producing all types of authentic craftwork in the medina. Some of the streets here are even named after these local craftsmen.

Pont de Sidi Salem (Bridge)

There are two bridges in the city and this one connects the old part of the town with Sidi Salem. Stop in the middle of Pont de Sidi Salem to snap photos of the harbor lined with colorful boats. The views remind us of the beloved bridges in Italian cities like Florence and Venice.
